Programme
The year 2011 brought about a real «parade» of anniversaries of the contemporary national history:
- Twenty years since the establishment of the presidency institute in Russia
- Twenty years since the August Putsch in Moscow;
- Twenty years since the ratification of the treaty for the creation of the Commonwealth of independent states;
- Twenty years since publication of many important acts concerning the economic reforms in the USSR and Russia;
- Twenty years since the ratification of the treaty between USSR and USA on the reduction and limitation of strategic offensive arms (СНВ-1)
- etc.
At the end of the XX century major geopolitical, social, economic changes influenced considerably the people’s destiny not only on the territory of the USSR, but also almost on the whole Eurasian continent. The contemporary state of the studied period’s source base, the level of the methodology’s development and research tools enable to analyse in a more detailed way the cause and effect relations of the «time of changes» events, to estimate the unique or generic character of our country’s past comparing to the key trends of the world history.
The 1991 was the year of complex decisions and ambiguous results. For still a long time contemporary and future generations will be arguing about «what happened to us and the Motherland». But today we understand already sharply as never before that our historical memory and the society’s attitude towards the own history has the direct influence on the future path’s choice. Whom do we consider ourselves, thinking about the past: the winners or the losers? The leading or the led? Knowing to anticipate the difficulties and to take all the necessary decisions, or only being late and mistaken? The society’s capacity to manage its future depends on the answers to these questions.
The conference not only provides with the opportunities for the exchange of ideas and findings related to the issues under discussion, but also aims at joining the efforts of various scholars of the Humanities in order to study interdisciplinary issues that are related to understanding of the causes and effects of the major historic processes at the end of the XX century.
